On January 2nd, 1911, Kandinsky and other members of the Neue Kunstlervereinigung Munchen, attended a concert featuring works by Arnold Schoenberg. This painting is reality in dissolution, but still present with the grand piano, audience shapes, yellow representing irrepressible vitality and colours and sound going together. This was the first painting that he made after the concert and the word impression referred to paintings that reproduced a direct expression of an internal nature. This picture is not the particular concert he heard, but his overall impression of the music performance however the central image of the painting is the black angular block representing the piano, so this particular concert is at the heart of the picture. It floats on a yellow sound. The listeners, shown as circles and arcs, are covered in the sound but at the same time are focusing on the piano. The music that so influenced Kandinsky was three piano pieces from 1909.. H: 110cm W: 130cm D: 4cm
