WWII Medal Group of Piper Lance Corporal DONALD MACDONALD Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders 2nd Battalion. Donald was from the Isle of Harris and was deployed to the Far East becoming a POW in CHANGI and involved in the Burma 'Death' railway. The POW Association website (https://lqcofepow.org/collections/macalister-macwhiter/products/macdonald-donald) shows after Changi he was at Tamarkan in Thailand for bridge construction and then Wampo to build a Railway viaduct that is still in use. Repatriated at the end of 1945 Donald returned to Stirling and then Glencorse Barracks in Penicuik. Later he served as Army Church Officer at Glencorse. He married an Auchendinny lassie and settled locally. Donald retired in 1984 and passed in 1988. The paperwork shows he lied about his date of birth by one year in order to sign up. The group includes his four medals mounted, a post war coloured framed photo of him in uniform with his bride (his cap badge is included), his post war A&S blazer patch, a 1980's picture of him at Glencorse, a telegram to his mum telling her he is in India on his way home (dated 14 Sept 1945) and other ephemera including a research sheet compiled by his granddaughter. The medal group comes direct from the family.
