An 1853 Indenture relating to SCARLETTS in the Parish of Wargave in Berkshire. Relating to the REV. JAMES EDWARD AUSTEN LEIGH a nephew of JANE AUSTEN who wrote the biography of Jane in 1869 and owned the property until his death in 1874. SCARLETTS was owned by the reverend’s father JAMES LEIGH PERROT (1735-1817) who was the brother of JANE AUSTENS mother, and resided at Scarletts until his death in 1817 when the property passed to his wife JANE LEIGH Perrot. Jane Austen was a frequent visitor to the property and wrote in 1817 ''I am ashamed to say that the shock of my Uncles will brought on a relapse, but a weak body must excuse weak nerves'. This indenture dated 1853 is between Revd. Leigh and C.R. LITTLEDALE for a half yearly rent of £245. Four sheets measuring 70cm x 55cm in good well stored condition.
