The neck protective leather has pretty much all gone but the helmet displays beautifully. There is a paper label attached which supposedly identified the helmet as coming from Monktonhall Pit in Edinburgh however this is now faded. Air would have been supplied through lengthy hoses and provided by the rescue team outwith the mine by means of a foot pump but it must have been a brave man indeed to don this helmet and plunge into a burning mine.
