A RARE FIND - 2 miniature bottles of QE2 blended Scotch Whisky accompanied by a letter sent from the ship during her maiden voyage: - "William Henry of Dumbarton was a joiner with John Brown’s Shipyard in Clydebank during the building of the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth 2. In December 1968 she left Scotland to undergo additional sea trials in the form of a ‘Shakedown Cruise’ to the Canaries and on board were around 200 finishing tradesmen, including William Henry. The invited passengers included senior shipyard management, Cunard staff and press. In the ship’s shops there was many memorabilia available and he bought 2 bottles of QE2 labelled whisky miniatures for his sons. A few days after William returned home in January 1969 a letter arrived. This was a letter he had written on board and posted to his wife, Ella. The envelope is doubled franked as having been posted on board the QE2 during the sea trials. The reverse of the envelope has the QE2 printed on it. The conversation between William and Ella, as reported by their son Brian, was short and to the point. “Is there anything in the letter I should know about” asks Ella. “No”, replied William, “it is just how I was getting on whilst on the trials.” The letter was put aside and remains unopened. As the envelope is shown to be QE2 stationery it is likely the letter is also written on QE2 stationery." A truly fascinating piece of Scottish shipping history.
