Condition report: In 1936 an old sea captain, Captain Charles Taylor, died and left £30, 000 toward a building to support the poor and destitute of Edinburgh. Opened in 1936, the building, the Old Sailor's Ark, occupied the corner site of the Royal Mile and New Street and contained soup kitchen, cafe, dispensary, etc, essentially a social work centre operating several years before the NHS. In the 1950's about two thirds of the building was sold off to a football pools company (perhaps Littlewoods), leaving a breakfast+lunch cafe accessible on New Street. By the '70's the health service Pricing Prescription department had taken over from the pools company, subsequently moving out in 1980's where it lay empty for a time before being occupied by Maddock's and Dick's, a tie-printing firm.
