Lot 156
WWII Kriegsmarine Leather Jacket and U Boat insignia Pennant. Jacket marked as Grose Size 50 by Max Moller of Koln. Dated 1st April 1943 it would likely have been a private purchase. From an RAF Sergeant who spent the war working at M.A.E.E Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment based at Helensburgh and working on anti submarine measures predominently with Sunderland Flying Boats. In 1945 he was sent to Loch Ryan near Stranraer when the U Boats were brought in on skeleton crews from Loch Eribol in Northern Scotland. During this time he secured the leather jacket and penant direct from a crew member in unknown circumstances. Post war he wore the jacket on his motorbikes and the penant remained a fixture in the pocket. The Jacket was very mouldy from storage so has been lightly sponged and given a light leather wax. Buttons are likely later replacements. The significance of the penant is unclear although these appear to have often been made on board U Boats as victory penants. The identification of the specific U Boat or German Officer remains unknown.
